LEIPZIGER VOLKSZEITUNG

Prokofiev Concerto No. 2 - Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig, Juanjo Mena
Because Hadelich made his Guarneri sing with fine and full-bodied tone. Because, instead of drawing caricatures, Mena and the Gewandhaus Orchestra demonstrated how consummate Lied accompaniment can work orchestrally. Everything added up in the outer movements, too. Clarity and composure engendered the beauty of the Allegro moderato, in which Hadelich’s sumptuously brocaded sound made you sit up and listen from the very first bar, whilst exuberant wit buoyed the hispanophile finale. Hadelich acknowledged the cheers with nonchalant virtuosity in Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s “Louisiana Blues Strut”.
